On 24 November, Professor Karl O. Stetter (1941) of Regensburg University will be presented with the Leeuwenhoek Medal for microbiology, which has been awarded once every decade since 1877. Among the earliest recipients were Louis Pasteur and Martinus Beijerinck. Professor Stetter studies micro-organisms that live under extreme conditions, for example high temperatures or very high pressure, such as can be found in craters, geysers and the 'black smokers' that occur on the floor of the Atlantic.
