Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research

The Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research focuses on developmental biology and stem cells at various levels, i.e. organism, cell, and DNA.

In addition to basic research, the institute carries out strategic biomedical and genome research, leading to a better understanding of such diseases as cancer.

What international experts have to say about the Hubrecht Institute

According to a report by an international peer review committee, the Academy’s Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research is even better now than it was six years ago, the last time it underwent an assessment. The institute is world leading, comparable in quality to MIT and Germany’s European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

The committee was impressed by the institute’s scientific output and the quality of its research, and praises both its new collaborative initiatives and its dynamic academic environment.

It expressed its support for the strategy that the institute’s director has charted for the coming years, which focuses on collaboration (both within the institute and with external groups) and interdisciplinarity. The committee considered it important for the institute to maintain a good balance between basic research and the demands of the clinic and society. It also made recommendations concerning the supervision of young researchers and technology transfer.
