Michel van der Aa (born in 1970) is an internationally renowned composer who experiments with other disciplines in his work, some of which is theatrical in nature. His multimedia opera After Life (2006) led to his being regarded as the man who will take opera into the twenty-first century. He has created an entirely new genre with his compositions, in which images play a key role (Van der Aa is also a film director).
His work is controversial; for example, his 3D opera Sunken Garden was both panned and praised after its premiere in London last year. His somewhat older Up Close, which combines a cello concert and film, will be performed across the United States and Europe this year.
