Currently associated with Toneelgroep Amsterdam, actor Gijs Scholten van Aschat (born in 1959) previously worked with the Nationaal Toneel and Orkater, among other companies. He has acted in countless plays, films, television programmes and series. Some years ago he showed his flair for writing with the novella Beretta Bobcat and the film scenario for De Poel. Scholten van Aschat has outspoken opinions about Dutch cultural policy and the position of artists.
Gijs Scholten van Aschat has been awarded all the important prizes for acting: an early (1983) Arlecchino award for a Dutch version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1983), the Louis d’Or award for a Dutch production of Steven Berkhoff’s Decadence, and the prestigious Albert van Dalsumring award. He was awarded a Gouden Kalf prize for his role in the television series Oud geld. Scholten van Aschat is also the best narrator in the Netherlands.
