Erwin Bulte is a development economist who studies the relationship between institutions and economic growth based on large-scale experiments in Africa and Asia. He and his research team investigated the relationship between violence, altruism and economic growth in Burundi, which has been torn apart by civil war. In rural Sierra Leone and Liberia, he studied the influence of local government and corruption on the effectiveness of development aid and the investment decisions of villagers. Bulte is a Fellow at Oxford and Cambridge University and a member of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
