Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) institutes form Humanities Cluster

22 September 2016

From 1 October 2016, the Meertens Institute, the Huygens Institute for Netherlands History (Huygens ING) and the International Institute of Social History (IISH) will form the KNAW Humanities Cluster. By establishing the Cluster, the institutes are responding to international developments in humanities research. The goal of their collaboration is to facilitate innovative, interdisciplinary humanities research on important scientific and social topics.

The KNAW Humanities Cluster is also building a digital infrastructure that will promote humanities research by offering methodological support. The KNAW Cluster will collect, develop, manage and make available datasets, digital collections and related services as part of the national infrastructure for humanities research.

The institutes will share a business office and service departments (including human resources, finance, building management and IT). They will maintain their own identities and continue to conduct and document research in their own fields.

Huygens ING and the Meertens Institute have moved to the centre of Amsterdam for this alliance. They are located in the Spinhuis Building. The IISH will remain at its Cruquiusweg location due to the size of the institute’s archive and library.
