Doel van de Akademie Colloquia is het bijeenbrengen van een selecte groep wetenschappelijk onderzoekers uit binnen- en buitenland op een actueel thema. De KNAW biedt financiële en logistieke ondersteuning bij de organisatie.

Vakgebied: Quantitative Cognitive Neuroscience.

The past decade has seen the emergence of a multidisciplinary field, "model-based cognitive neuroscience". In this field, researchers use formal models as tools to quantify latent cognitive processes that can then be associated to brain measurements. At the same time, researchers in this emerging field also use brain measurements (e.g., single-unit electrophysiology, magneto/electroencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging) to address questions about cognitive models that cannot be addressed by means of behavioral data alone. This colloquium focuses on recent developments in model-based cognitive neuroscience and highlights the symbiotic relationship between formal modeling and cognitive neuroscience. By stimulating this relationship, the colloquium accelerates the search for mechanistic explanations of cognitive processes and discourages the assignment of cognitive functions to particular neural substrates without first attempting to disentangle the myriad operations that underlie a single behavioral output measurement such as reaction-time or accuracy. On the first day, experts in quantitative modeling present their work, followed on the second day by experts in the cognitive neurosciences. The third day features a masterclass with Dr Roger Ratcliff and Dr John Serences.
