Catalysis is at the centre of major societal challenges involving energy, the environment, and sustainability. Meeting these challenges requires an interdisciplinary scientific approach. Ranging from molecules to materials and processes and combining efforts from various disciplines, including but not limited to chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering.


Catalysis is the quiet force behind the modernisation of our chemical and energy industry. It ensures the more efficient use of finite natural resources, helps to prevent waste and air pollution, and makes our manufacturing processes safer. In the past century, catalysis has become the basis of large-scale processes in bulk and fine chemistry, as well as in petrochemistry. But shifting demands and new environmental challenges clearly demand new catalytic solutions. Catalysis will play a key role in some of the biggest challenges faced not only by industry, but by our society as a whole. An interdisciplinary ‘molecule-to-material’ approach – one that looks at processes and how advances in heterogeneous, homogeneous, and enzymatic catalysis can be leveraged to improve them – will be crucial to tackling issues ranging from energy and the environment, to healthcare and sustainable development. This symposium will provide a forum for six leading scientists to present their views on the more distant future of catalysis research.

This symposium will also serve as the official kick-off for the development of the new Catalysis Science and Technology Roadmap by NIOK and VIRAN. The new Roadmap will describe a joint academic and industrial vision of the future of catalysis in the Netherlands.
