Personal leadership for academics

You just became a manager – an exciting but challenging new role for you. This course will give you all the tools you need to enjoy your new role and get the right results. You’ll learn effective management methods, smart dialogue techniques and better coaching skills. 

The course will show you how to oversee projects (project management), funding and progress so that, in addition to project and team management duties, you will have enough time to carry out (and ‘sell’) your own research. 

During the course, we will work with numerous real-world case studies to ensure that you can put what you learn into practice in your job, whether that means organising your own work or dealing with team members and partners.

Target group

Academy research staff who are in a position of leadership for the first time (junior head of group, tenure tracker) and managing a group (of PhDs), as well as any staff who are heading large or very large programmes for the first time in which they are required to supervise subordinates.

Practical information

  • Duration: Five training days from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Between the training days, you’ll attend three ‘Grow your leadership’ sessions, each lasting 2.5 hours. These are online sessions in which you’ll be part of a smaller group. The course includes personalised e-coaching and meetings with your supervisor. 
  • Date of intake interviews, group 1 (1 hour): 14 May 2020 (location: Academy’s Trippenhuis Building)
  • Dates of training days, group 1: 2 June, 8 September, 6 October and 8 December 2020, 16 February 2021
  • Dates of 'Grow your leadership' sessions, group 1: 7 July and 3 November 2020, 14 January 2021
  • We will only start a second group if group 1 is full.

To participate in this training you must be nominated by the director of the institute.

Registration

The Local Consultations Committee (employer and union representatives) considers it well worthwhile to spend part of the employee benefits budget on sustainable career development. Training, courses and coaching meant to support sustainable career development are therefore funded from this budget.
