The broad public discussion of ‘self-plagiarism’ that arose at the beginning of 2014 revealed, amongst other things, that there is a grey area between plagiarism and self-citation. At the end of January 2014, the Board of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) therefore set up a Committee on Citation Practice to prepare an advisory memorandum on that topic.
The Committee’s task is to clarify how issues in the transitional area between plagiarism and self-citation should be interpreted and assessed. The Committee’s work must result in an assessment framework that can be applied by confidential counsellors, integrity committees, and the boards of universities and research institutions.
The advisory memorandum will be completed in April 2014.
