Heineken Young Scientists Awards

The Heineken Young Scientists Awards are intended to give the next generation of talented researchers extra encouragement. They are presented simultaneously with the international Heineken Prizes to promising young researchers whose outstanding work sets an example for other young scientists and scholars.

The Heineken Young Scientists Awards consist of a work of art designed by Jeroen Henneman and a cash prize of EUR 10,000. The Awards are funded by the Alfred Heineken Fondsen Foundation.

Scientific Domains

Four Awards are conferred, one in each of the following domains:

  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • Medical/Biomedical Sciences
  • Natural Sciences

Who is it for?

Young researchers whose outstanding achievements in science and scholarship set an example for other young researchers. Candidates must be employed at a Dutch research institute. Candidates must have obtained their PhD three to eight years prior to the Awards being made.

Nomination and awards ceremony

Nominations for the Heineken Young Scientists Awards may be submitted by:

  • members of the Academy and The Young Academy
  • governing boards and deans of Dutch universities
  • directors of Academy and NWO research institutes. 

Nominations must be submitted using the nomination form. The deadline for submitting this form is 1 February 2020. You may e-mail the form to wetenschapsfondsen@knaw.nl 

The awards ceremonies for the Heineken Young Scientists Awards and the international Heineken Prizes will both take place at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam on 1 October 2020.
