The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) performs research in the humanities and social sciences focusing on Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, in particular Indonesia and the Dutch Caribbean.
Researchers at KITLV study the continuities and discontinuities between the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. Their empirical and theoretical research contributes to the broader debate about complex processes of globalisation.
Long-term topics of research at the KITLV are:
- state formation, violence and citizenship
- mobility and identity.
