Ramsey Nasr (born in 1974) has shown himself to be a man of many passions in his numerous articles and opinion pieces. Alongside his love of art – classical music, drama, poetry – he takes a deep interest in contemporary politics, both in the Netherlands and abroad. A collection of Nasr’s poetry entitled Tussen lelie en waterstofbom was published in 2009. In addition to his literary output, Nasr is a talented actor and director. He has worked with the Zuidelijk Toneel, performed one-man shows, and appeared in films and television series. He had directed his own theatre monologues as well as other actors in music theatre. In 2009 he became the Netherlands’ Poet Laureate for a four-year period.
His collection Mijn nieuwe vaderland. Gedichten van crisis en angst, which concerns the relationship between art and culture and Dutch politics, won him the 2011 E. du Perronprijs. He took a new approach to widening the audience for poetry with Hier komt de poëzie!, a box of seven CDs featuring his favourite Dutch poems. Nasr received the Gouden Ganzenveer award in 2013 and is one of the core company of actors in Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
