Maarten de Rijke is best known for his contributions to information retrieval, the science behind search engines. He and his team work on search engines that learn to decipher what their users are seeking in order to improve their results. He was one of the first to develop social media search engines and search engines that use the knowledge in Wikipedia to learn about connections and to perform analyses. More recently, he has developed search engines that can explain their own results.
