Science and innovation have introduced functional materials in commercial products, which comprise low-abundance elements like lithium, platinum and rare earth elements like La, Nd, Dy, Tb etc. The minerals from which these elements are mined have sometimes a restricted geographical distribution or invoke unsustainable exploitation.
What are the consequences of scarcity and supply risk of such elements for industrialised countries, e.g. in the areas of high-tech industry, catalysis and sustainable energy? During this symposium challenges and opportunities for science, industry and government are discussed.
