Managing Europe’s forests under conflicting objectives calls for a holistic view and new tools. The ever-increasing demands on our forests are leading to conflicts concerning their management and use. The aim of the symposium is to contribute to an evidenced-based national forest management and energy policy.
One good example is the conflict between the demand for increased extraction of biomass from forests and the contribution made by the same biomass in situ to soil fertility, biodiversity and protective functions. In 2017, the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) published its report Multi-functionality and Sustainability in the European Union's Forests.
