Counting problems in statistical physics: loop models and tilings

We shall present several examples of simple systems of two-dimensional statistical mechanics which can model a variety of physical phenomena including transport in random media, phases of linear polymers in solution, and equilibrium shapes of crystals. Sometimes these systems can be amenable to an exact solution, and can be reformulated as counting certain classes of mathematical objects (such as "plane partitions" or "alternating sign matrices"); we shall show how they create new remarkable interrelations between these enumeration problems.
