Seminar by Ralf Grüttemeier, professor of Dutch literature at the Carl von Ossietzky, currently Fellow-in-Residence at NIAS-KNAW.

Authorial intention has been a much discussed topic over the last decades, not only in literary theory and in the interpretation of literary texts, but also in other disciplines. A consensus in this debate is still beyond reach, and due to its normative character this will remain so.

Against this background, the seminar will take a different approach by reconstructing concepts and shifts concerning authorial intention from a historical perspective, and identifying benchmarks in the history of the concept in the 19th and 20th centuries. In a brief case study, the results will be related to the literary criticism during the Dutch interbellum period, in order to test their relevance for the existing scholarly image of that period.
