Scientists, politicians, policy-makers and the media worldwide are discussing the future of bio-based products and the competition between food and fuel. The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences have set up an Agriculture beyond Food research programme focusing on Indonesia.

The programme aims to enhance and support long-term scientific cooperation between research groups in Indonesia and the Netherlands concerning the innovative use of bio-based resources.

New developments in the bio-based economy are considered both a threat to sustainability and food security and an exciting new option for the agricultural sector. This programme will explore opportunities and threats and investigate the limits of “agriculture beyond food”.

Multidisciplinary approach

The Academy and NWO have selected three multidisciplinary research clusters within the context of the programme. Researchers in the fields of agriculture, technology, the social sciences, economics, environmental science, and the law are cooperating in five domains:

  • Governance and legal context
  • Socioeconomic aspects
  • Production
  • Processing
  • Market and logistics.
