Organisation, board and management

The Academy is both a learned society and an organisation of national research institutes. The Academy Board defines the overall policy and budget. The director general has overall responsibility for day-to-day management of the Academy. 

Academy Board

The Academy Board consists of the president, two vice-presidents (one of whom is also the general secretary) and four board members acting as domain chairpersons. They are appointed by the members.

  • Board member/domain chairperson Humanities (GW): Martin van Hees
  • Board member/domain chairperson Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences (MMBG): Sjaak Neefjes
  • Board member/domain chairperson Natural Sciences and Technology (NTW): Ton van der Steen
  • Board member/domain chairperson Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences and Law (GMRW): Clara Mulder

President Marileen Dogterom

Marileen Dogterom, Professor of Bionanoscience at TU Delft has been President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science since 1 June 2022. She combines the presidency with her scientific work.

Board of Management and Academy Bureau

The consensus-based Board of Management is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Academy organisation and acts as the executive body for the organisation of national research institutes. It is assisted by the Academy Bureau. The Board of Management consists of a Director of General Affairs, a Director of Research Policy and a Director of Operational Management.

Effective 1 October 2024, the three members of the Board of Management will be:

  • Adriana Esmeijer, Director of General Affairs
  • Iwan Holleman, Director of Operational Management 
  • Geert de Snoo, Director of Research Policy
