Although this is a global phenomenon, some people are affected more than others—and as with many a climate issue, these inequalities bear witness of the afterlife of (post)colonialism. In this talk, we shed light on the ambiguous nature of marine protection and the colonial dimensions of ocean health.

De Christiaan Huygens Wetenschapsprijs bekroont een jonge onderzoeker die een innovatieve bijdrage aan de ruimtewetenschappen, wiskunde of natuurkunde heeft geleverd in een proefschrift. De laureaat ontvangt een bronzen beeld van Christiaan Huygens en een geldbedrag van 10.000 euro.In 2024 staat het vakgebied wiskunde centraal.

De KNAW vindt dat onderzoeksgegevens en publicaties met publiek geld gefinancierd onderzoek vrij toegankelijk moeten zijn. Ze vraagt tevens haar eigen onderzoekers om publicaties open access uit te brengen. Dat betekent dat deze onderzoeksresultaten, zoals artikelen, boeken, proefschriften of rapporten, gratis en onbeperkt toegankelijk zijn.

It is important and urgent for the planning agencies to systematically survey the effects of investments in science on indicators of broad well-being. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences states this in a new advisory report on The Value of Science – Observe, Know and Measure [Waarde van Wetenschap – Observeren, weten en meten]. At present, that value is wrongly absent from the planning agencies' models, leading to underinvestment in science.

n reactie op de oorlog in Oekraïne zien we symbolische acties die troost en steun kunnen bieden. Maar er is meer mogelijk. Kunst kan polariserende en misleidende (zij)verhalen afremmen, vormen van verbondenheid met vluchtelingen bieden en andere vragen stellen die ons tot nieuwe manieren van denken kunnen brengen. En we kunnen vandaag al aan de slag met wederopbouw. De Akademie van Kunsten organiseert werksessies om hierover samen na te denken en te werken aan concrete uitkomsten.

De Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Award wordt toegekend aan een onderzoeker (of een team van onderzoekers) die zich bijzonder verdienstelijk maakt of heeft gemaakt op het gebied van (translationeel) wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar kanker alsmede de zorg voor kankerpatiënten. De laureaat ontvangt een geldbedrag van €100.000,- te besteden aan onderzoek en een bronzen sculptuur.

The focus of research at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research is developmental and stem cell biology. The institute has twenty-four interdisciplinary research groups that conduct basic research using healthy and sick cells, tissue and organisms.

The Hubrecht Institute collaborates with numerous local, national and international laboratories. It is partnered with Utrecht University Medical Centre, Utrecht University, Princess Máxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Oncode Institute.

In de Uit de Kunst-lezing van 21 december vertelde Jetse Batelaan, jeugdtheaterregisseur, aan de hand van beeldfragmenten over zijn ontwikkeling als maker en zijn werk bij Theater Artemis. Daar maakt hij ontregelend en grensverleggend theater voor kinderen, pubers en iedereen die dan nog overblijft. In zijn lezing vertelt hij meer over zijn aanvankelijke ongemak met drama en conflict, de inspirerende subversieve kracht van een jong publiek en de waarde van paniek in de kunstbeleving van kinderen. Zowel zijn voorstellingen als ook de kunstprojecten van Theater Artemis komen in deze lezing aan bod.

Het Trippenhuis is met haar historische architectuur een bijzondere locatie voor uw evenement. Het werd tussen 1660 en 1662 gebouwd als woonhuis voor de broers Louys en Hendrick  Trip, handelaren in koper, ijzer en wapens. Vanaf het begin van de 19e eeuw deed het dienst als zetel van de Akademie én als Rijksmuseum waar de Nachtwacht en andere bekende werken te bezichtigen waren. Toen het Rijksmuseum vertrok, bleef de Akademie en breidde zij over de jaren uit naar de omliggende grachtenpanden.

Locatieverhuur

De Franse oncologe Laurence Zitvogel onderzoekt al dertig jaar het verband tussen het immuunsysteem en het succes van therapieën om kanker te bestrijden. Zo ontdekte zij onder meer dat micro-organismen in de darm de effectiviteit van de behandeling van kanker beïnvloeden. Voor haar baanbrekende wetenschappelijke werk op dat gebied en haar gedreven inzet om daarmee de behandeling van en de zorg voor kankerpatiënten te verbeteren, ontvangt zij dit jaar de Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Award. De voertaal tijdens deze bijeenkomst is Engels.
