KNAW Grant Week 2024

Getting ready to make an Impact!

Impactful research, how do you achieve that? Meeting the growing requirement to demonstrate the impact your research can have on society, especially when writing grant applications, can be challenging. With impact as our theme, the KNAW Grant Week 2024 provides you with the tips and tricks on navigating your route to impact. Where to begin, how to understand your motives and eventually, how to articulate your impact.

The KNAW Grant Week will take place from 5 to 7 November 2024 at the KNAW Trippenhuis building, Amsterdam. Together with the Career Development Centre (CLO), the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) organises several workshops and inspiring lectures on writing grant applications and how to achieve impact as a scientist and with your research.

What will you learn?

During the Grant Week, you will learn how to navigate the (inter)national funding landscape and how to apply for individual grants such as Veni, MSCA or ERC.  You can follow workshops on ‘Social media & science’, ‘Pitching your research and yourself’, but also on ‘creative academic writing’ and ‘media training’, or attend practical skills training on grant writing. Further perks of this event are meeting your peers from other KNAW institutes and perhaps starting new collaborations.

Above all, the various workshops and lectures will help you ‘getting ready’. Experts from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), NWO, the Academy and grant consultancy firms are there to  share their knowledge with you!

The Grant Week is available for KNAW employees only.

KNAW Grant week 2023: Impactful research, impactful you - Evaluation

The KNAW looks back on a successful sixth edition of the Grant Week, mainly thanks to the many impact workshops. After all, looking for ways to create impact is becoming increasingly important when writing a good research proposal. This annual event took place from 7 to 9 November at the KNAW Trippenhuis.

Researchers from all institutes were represented among the participants. The speakers came from the Young Academy, the Rathenau Institute, the Netherlands Brain Institute and the KNAW Humanities cluster. There were 110 registrations for the workshops over the three days with 54 unique participants. The Grant week as a whole was rated very well (8.8 out of 10). Some responses from participants:

• We received valuable tips on finding funding, writing proposals and assessment. I learned a lot about in-depth questions and conditions that the research format sets.

• I enjoyed learning how to present the impact of almost any project in a clear way. It was very exciting to pitch to fellow participants from other institutes, and it gave me insight into how to formulate my research proposal in such a way that it also appeals to other disciplines.

The importance of the Grant week is well expressed in an interview on the intranet (Portus) with a participant who was present all three days and talks about her experiences.
