Het onderzoek binnen het Hubrecht Instituut voor Ontwikkelingsbiologie en Stamcelonderzoek -KNAW richt zich op de ontwikkelings- en stamcelbiologie. Het instituut heeft 24 onderzoeksgroepen die fundamenteel, multidisciplinair onderzoek verrichten op gezonde en zieke cellen, weefsels en organismen. Het Hubrecht Instituut werkt samen met talrijke laboratoria op lokaal, nationaal en internationaal niveau. Het instituut heeft een speciaal partnerschap met het UMC Utrecht, Universiteit Utrecht, Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie, het European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) en Oncode Institute.

Het instituut wordt door haar collega’s beoordeeld als een van de beste onderzoeksinstituten wereldwijd op het gebied van ontwikkelings- en stamcelbiologie. Deze hoge kwaliteit werd bevestigd in een onafhankelijke wetenschappelijke evaluatie: 'The review committee was unanimously very impressed by the outstanding quality of the research performed at the Hubrecht Institute. With respect to the criteria 'Relevance to Society' and 'Viability', the committee rated the Institute as excellent as well. According to the committee it is undeniable that the Institute has achieved and maintained its status as a world leading Institute on stem cell and developmental biology.'
